CAE Update, June 2009

Application new changes and terms: Currently, a CAE application is valid for up to three years. Beginning after December 4, new applications will only be valid for 12 months. After 12 months, candidates would need to submit a new application to retest. There will be no change in application or testing fees.

New Application Professional Development requirements:

  • Beginning after December 4, new applications will need to submit 100 hours of professional development hours within the past five years.
  • No more than 20 professional development hours can come from one exam content domain. (For example, four full days of legal training would count as 20 hours rather than 24 due to the cap.)
  • Applications will be able to list general ssociation management programs (such as an Annual Meeting or CAE prep course) without any restriction.
  • Candidates with an application on file with fewer than 100 hours will need to submit documentation of an additional 25 hours within the past five years.

New professional development credits for mentoring:

  • Effective January 2010, the CAE program will recognize receiving mentoring specifically focused on the field of association management as a professional development activity.
  • Hours will count on a 50% basis, up to 10 hours for new applications and four hours for renewals. The mentor must be a CAE and sign a designated form completed by the mentee.
  • Third, the research and process to update the CAE exam content outline has been completed. The work has included an extensive survey of association professionals, a peer review process by a CAE committee, and review by the CAE Commission and Examination Committee. The new exam content outline will first be used as the basis for the CAE exam beginning in May 2010 and through December 2014, unless a replacement outline is named sooner.
